1999 Taylor K14c

One to Commemorate

As I was growing up, if you wanted a good guitar, you got a Martin. I first encountered a Taylor guitar at the studio where I work, when Amy Grant came in to record with her Taylor 912ce. I was incredibly impressed with the sound, the projection, and the fit and finish of the instrument and decided I wanted a guitar that nice. On a holiday I got the chance to play through the entire Taylor line from top to bottom. One guitar, the Taylor K14c, stuck out, due to its responsiveness to a light touch. I did blind listening tests and my lovely wife agreed that this guitar just fot my playing style perfectly. Playing the Taylors I became enamored with their precise intonation. Within a few months my wife bought this K14c for me to commemorate our twentieth wedding anniversary. The combination of koa body wood and cedar top made for an extremely intimate and light-sounding instrument and the inlay was both pretty and understated. The guitar is physically extremely light and resonant as well. I should mentioned that this particular guitar carries as its start date the last day of Taylor production of the last year of the last century. Pretty cool, huh? Because of what it represents, this is one guitar I reserve mostly for the studio and the sofa at home.

Here it is back from finish repairs after being refretted:

Unfortunately there were still finish issues so the good folks at Taylor agreed to take it on. Here it is at the plant:

Body back sprayed and scuffed and ready for buffing

Body front cleaned up and ready for buffing

Headstock finished and ready

Neck shaft finished and ready

The guitar returned from Taylor looking and feeling spectacular! Thanks to the good folks at Taylor and my luthier, Kenny Marshall.
